This book covers the history of around 140 pubs/alehouses of Middleton, nearly as many as those that were in the middle of 19th century.

The histories described vary in size depending on the historical source but most of the pub histories emphasised their past licensees/owners and their deeds or mis-demeanors and their relationships with the police, the magistrates and their brewery owners.

A most interesting book recording aspects of life around the pubs,
with a good collection of old pub photos - about one photo per page.
