A comprehensive history of two adjacent inner city areas of Manchester which grew rapidly in the 19th century then demolished by inflexible municipal decrees in the early 1960s (rebuilt in souless 'modern' style then demolished in the 1990s to start again!).
The book is in 3 parts, the 1st is about Hulme, the 2nd is for Chorlton-on-Medlock and the 3rd is a short list of breweries and brewhouses in these areas. Each of the first 2 parts have first numerous historical descriptions from various landlords and landladies who lived in the area - full of the social life in a busy city neighbourhood. The second part of Part 1 and Part 2 list the pubs and beerhouses of Hulme and Chorlton respectively by street by street, giving the salient details of each pub - pub name, location, brewery, and closure date. A real interesting history of pubs and people and places.
