This is a historic inns guide with a difference! No vague stories and legends of the past or unsubstantiated age claims. Here we have about one third of the book taken up with explaining the history and development of inns, their range of services, early descriptions, their varied clientele and unusually the sources used to construct the inns' histories.
The remaining 2/3rds of the book is the gazetteer - all the beerhouses, inns, taverns, pubs or hotels known to have existed in Lancaster over the last 400 years. The inns are listed in alphabetical order. The information entered for each inn varies from a one line entry (where very little info exists) to a two pages with photos, list of licensees and owners, full description & history and records references.
Finally a list of innkeepers who could not be assigned to an inn,and a substantial bilbliography. A street plan would come in handy!
