sub-titled "One man's search for the beer that built the British Empire" this is the entertaining story of the implementation of the author's wild(?) idea to recreate and accompany a barrel of IPA (Imperial Pale Ale) from its birth in a Burton-on-Trent brewery down to and across the south Atlantic, round the Cape and up to India. The beer was specially brewed at the White Shield Brewery in Burton and eventually had an explosive public reception at the British Embasssy in Calcutta.
The hilarious journey of cask and author is recounted in this very entertaining book with islands of beer, brewery and brewing discussion amongst waves of travel escapades.
