A thorough history of both the pubs and breweries of this delightful old Lincolnshire town with some excellent b & w reproductions of many old photos and maps. About 1/2 the book is a gazetteer of both the pubs and the breweries on a street by street basis, with ownership history and specific discussion of the pub name and the current beers. Preceding the gazetteer are various chapters on Stamford's breweries and especially on the development of the pub trade through various phases looking in detail at inns, the drinks trade generally, pub entertainment and alehouse names. Concluding this workmanlike study is a substantial appendix of freemans rolls & poll books, bibliography, illustration sources and a comprehensive index. Recommended not only to Stamfordians but to students of pub and brewery history in general.
